This elegant three-storey Elizabethan house was probably built between 1597 and 1601, before being modified in the 18C, redecorated in the early 20C and, finally, bought by the National Trust. On the first floor, visitors can see the purple bedroom with its sumptuous oak four-poster bed bearing the coat of arms of James I, and, on the second floor, the gallery of portraits loaned by the National Portrait Gallery. The formal gardens offset the architecture of the house.
