The Church of St John the Warrior was built in a style still considered Naryshkin Baroque in 1712, at a time when only wooden buildings were being built in Moscow (on the order of Tsar Peter the Great, since stone was reserved for St. Petersburg). Its polychrome polished brick roof and octagonal tower are its distinctive features. The superb interior boasts frescoes and a sparkling gilded iconostasis.
