The Pushkin Museum of Fine Art, today relieved of its modern art collections, is nonetheless fully worthy of a visit. In the Hellenistic and Coptic rooms, the Fayum portraits (1C BC) are striking for the depth of the faces, painted by Greek artists to accompany the mummies of the deceased. Another highlight are the Dutch and Flemish schools (12-17C), featuring major works by Lucas Cranach the Old, Pieter Bruegel the Young and Rembrandt.
