guided tour in Italian and English - 10.30am-4.30pm (Sun 10.30am-12.30pm)
Europe's first opera house, it was built in 1737, before La Scala and La Fenice. Completely ravaged by fire in 1816, it was reconstructed entirely as before within six months. Only the fabulous Royal Box is original. With its amazing stuccowork, gilded wood panelling and red velvet decorative scheme, the horseshoe-shaped auditorium is six storeys high and has 160 boxes. Thanks to its perfect acoustics and broad stage, San Carlo ranks as one of Italy's foremost musical venues.
