Description

Fifty years after the town's foundation in 1248, it was encircled by a long stone wall 2 300m long and 7.5m high and comprising four gates, which provided the only access to the town until the 19C. Bastions, called Wiekhäuser, were built every 30m. Original 54 in number, 26 have now been rebuilt or restored.
