Bonampak, in the heart of Lacandon Indian territory, is a miracle of conservation. Contrary to the other temples in Chiapas, a humid region, its Maya murals have survived (unfortunately, damaged during their restoration). Their discovery in 1946 completely transformed the prevailing idea that this was a pacifistic civilisation. In three of its chambers, the murals describe three sequences (before, during and after) a deadly battle that took place during the reign of Chaan Muan II (8C AD).
