Useful information

Description

Among the unique features of this 110-acre, world-class zoo is the Lied Jungle, a 1.5-acre indoor rain-forest exhibit that pulsates with life from Asia, Africa and South America. Monkeys howl and macaws screech as visitors duck under vines and waterfalls, walk through caves and swing across rope bridges. The Cat Complex, featuring 85 felines-including lions, tigers and leopards-is North America's largest. Scott Aquarium displays 20,000 species of fish, 8ft-long sharks and a colony of penguins. Scheduled to open in 2002 is the Desert Dome, a geodesic dome 13 stories high and 230ft in diameter that will depict Africa's Namib Desert, Australia's Great Sandy Desert and North America's Sonoran Desert. The dome's lower level is projected as a nocturnal exhibit, to open in 2003. Other features of the zoo-situated next door to Rosenblatt Stadium, home of the annual College World Series of baseball-are the therapeutic Garden of the Senses, a carousel of handcarved animals, and a large IMAX theater. In 1998, the zoo opened its Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park & Wildlife Safari, 26mi southwest of Omaha. Visitors drive 4mi of prairie-and-wetland road to find bison, deer, elk, pronghorn, waterfowl and other creatures, April to October.
