Running from the Royal Palace to the main railway station, Karl Johans Gate is the most famous and busiest thoroughfare in Oslo and is close to all the city's major buildings, including the cathedral, Parliament, university, national theatre and royal castle. Straight in length but never monotonous, and in many places restricted to pedestrians, it is a pleasant avenue for a stroll past grand hotels, elegant cafés, boutiques and museums, where a mix of architectural styles and atmospheres come together.
