The Michelin Guide's review
Isolated in the Arenteiro Valley, this grandiose Cisercian monastery was founded in the mid-12C by Alfonso VII. The name is a reminder of the wild bears that used to roam this area but it is also known as the Escurial of Galicia. The monastery has a large ceremonial staircase and a 12-13C church which, despite its 1637 baroque façade, is simple. The 15-16C capitulay room has some fine vaults.
