The fine Casa dos Contos was built between 1782 and 1784 by the fantastically wealthy João Rodrigues de Macedo, future member of the Minas conspiracy movement. Transformed into a prison for the plotters, it then came to house the crown jewels, before becoming a gold foundry. The site is worth visiting more for the architecture than for the Museum of the Mint. More interesting is the disparate collection of tools, cooking-pots, swords, whips and chains for slaves displayed in the basement.
