Useful information

Description

Two carved lions stand in front of the colorful Chinatown Gate (N.W. 4th Ave. and W. Burnside St.), erected in 1986 to commemorate 135 years of Chinese contributions to the city of Portland and the state of Oregon. The five-tiered gate marks the official entrance to Portland's low-key Chinatown district, home to several Chinese restaurants and grocery stores. A new Classical Chinese Garden, scheduled to open in the year 2000, will cover the block between Northwest Second and Third Avenues and Northwest Glisan and Flanders Streets. A joint project between the City of Portland and its sister-city of Suzhou, it will feature serpentine walkways, ponds, bridges and a landscape of rocks, trees, shrubs, screens and pavilions.
