A charter jetboat service offers half-day excursions through part of the site of the Manhattan Project, where the plutonium used in the nuclear bomb dropped on Nagasaki in 1945 was produced. Largely undeveloped before World War II and then placed off-limits throughout the Hanford Site's status as a nuclear weapons facility, the desert lands bordering the Hanford Reach are still wild, mostly roadless, and rich in wildlife.
