Sigismond I Malatesta (1417-1468), who had this austere château built, with the help of architect Filippo Brunelleschi, governed with a somewhat heartless fashion and without scrupules nevertheless conducted himself like a true patron in attracting Piero della Francesca and Leon Battista Albert to the town.
