The Rostov Kremlin, former residence of the metropolitan, was founded in the 12C on the banks of Lake Nero. It is particularly impressive with its white walls studded with eleven towers, from which rise the domes ofDormition Cathedral. Once past the Gates you enter the Metropolitan's Courtyard containing several tightly grouped buildings dating from the late 17C, including palaces turned into museums and churches richly decorated with frescoes.
