Useful information

Description

This landmark fortress was built by John Sutter in 1839. Adobe buildings home to the early settlers' housing and workshops are laid out around a huge central courtyard, although only Sutter's quarters are period. Twice a week in low season and every day in summer, costumed extras, parents and children, bring the old fort back to life. Visitors will learn how to make candles and baskets, to weave and bake bread.
