Standing on the aptly named Victory Square, the Monument to the Heroic Defenders of Leningrad, a large red granite obelisk, can be seen from afar. It is surrounded by statues of hero figures, be they military or civilian, who distinguished themselves in the defence of the besieged city during the Second World War. The overall composition is laid out in the form of a broken circle, symbolising the breaking of the blockade. Since its inauguration in 1975, the Eternal Flame has never stopped burning.
