Description

The Palace of the Quetzal-Butterfly owes its name to the main motif on the patio columns: a mythological bird with the body of a butterfly. This residential complex, on the western side of Plaza de la Luna, was where the priests in charge of worship lived. In the courtyard of the Palacio de los Jaguares, murals show jaguars blowing on shells, a musical ritual linked to fertility. The even more beautiful painted decorations of the Templo de los Caracoles (accessible through a tunnel) feature green parrots spitting vital liquid on ears of corn.
