Neva Gate, pierced through the Neva curtain wall between the Naryshkin and the Tsar's bastions, was designed by Nicholas Lvov, who topped it with a pediment and a portico with columns. Note the vault on the right "chronicling" the highest levels reached by the Neva, with 1824 being the worst year on record. Despite its former grim reputation (it was where condemned men were led), its embankments and location are now popular for riverside outings.
