A house standing at the intersection of Grajdanskaya St. and Carpenters' Alley is considered to be the home of Raskolnikov, the hero of Crime and Punishment. With its cracked walls and balcony threatening to collapse at any moment, the building seems to have changed very little since the 19C. A monument was erected by the corner wall honouring the writer and his hero. Part-plaque, part-statue, it shows Dostoevsky bent over, his face twisted in a painful expression.
