Description
Not much remains of the original Presidio de Santa Barbara, a fortress built by the Spanish, however reconstruction is underway. At the time of the Spanish, the fort was the seat of military and civil government of a territory that stretched from Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo. Today the only original structures are El Cuartel (1788), the barracks and Cañedo Adobe (1782), used for exhibitions. Interesting film about Spanish settlement in upper California, from 1542.
