Useful information

Description

Set in upper Santa Barbara, in the foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains, the community of the Queen of Missions is still active. It was founded in 1786, two years after the death of Junípero Serra, who would have started building earlier but was thwarted by the governor. The latter had the Presidio built instead, due to worries about the missionaries' influence. The imposing church is depicted by a colorful Mexican-inspired interior. The museum is devoted to the mission and the Native American Chumash.
