A visit to this section of the tunnel, under the airport, gives visitors a chance to better understand the contemporary history of Sarajevo. During the three years of siege, this tunnel was the only point of contact between the city's inhabitants and the rest of the world. The Serbian army, from their vantage point on the fortified hills, fired relentlessly at residents, who were already subsisting on so little. The tunnel was completed on 30 June 1993, when the men digging from either side met in the middle.
