Description

This temple was founded by Buddhist scholar Kobo Daishi in the 9C. In the wake of many fires, it was destroyed in 1863 and rebuilt during the pro-Shintoist and deeply anti-Buddhist Meiji period. The Dainichi Nyorai sculpture of "he who spreads light everywhere" bears witness to the first period. The Cosmic Buddha, to whom the temple is devoted, is the work of Jikkei. Buddhist paintings are housed in the museum, where you can also see the Red Mask with contorted features.
