To the south of Sintra, the very attractive Pena Park covers an area of 200ha on the granite slopes of the Serra. It is planted with many rare species and has a large number of pools and fountains. A visit on foot is quite charming, but the motorist in a hurry will have to be content with driving along the small roads which criss-cross it, or ascending to the tops of its two highest points, one of which has the Palace of Pena and the other the Cruz Alta.
