In 1930, a magnificent Tudor period house was discovered by Vita Sackville-West and her husband, Harold Nicholson. The tower became their office (note the Hogarth press that printed the first edition of The Waste Land, by TS Eliot) and the garden became their monument. The end of the axial alleys and their open gardens (each in a different colour) are decorated with arches and statues.
