Useful information

Description

Salt extraction in Romania dates back to Roman times. A visit to the Slanic (meaning salt in Romanian) mine, Europe's largest, takes in long galleries 200m below ground. It ceased production in 1969, since it was no longer economically viable. The attractive residential town is now a pleasant spa resort renowned for its iodised air.
