Church of the Snake
The Green Guide

Useful information

Description

One of the chapels in the Soganli Valley, the Church of the Snake was once part of a monastery, of which several rooms and cells still survive. The church has undergone extensive damage and the frescoes themselves are in poor condition. To the left of the entrance, note the image of St George slaying the dragon, which is represented by a snake, hence the name of the church. On the opposite side of the church, the vault is painted with an attractive scene featuring Abraham, Isaac and Jacob carrying twelve heads of children, thought to symbolise the twelve tribes of Israel.
