On the slopes of Lawu Volcano, 1 200m above sea level, Candi Ceto stands like a mirage rising out of the mist and greenery. It is a contemporary of Candi Sukuh (c 1468-1475) and devoted to the same cult. However, its seven terraces are reminiscent of the layout of Balinese temples. Still frequented by worshippers today, when the building was restored, Suharto, who is said to have come here to pray, had wooden pavilions added.
