Useful information

Description

Widely recognised in its day as a feat of engineering and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the familiar outline of this cantilever bridge (suspended without cables) has become a symbol of Scotland. Built between 1883-90, it was an ambitious project, particularly in the wake of the great Tay Bridge disaster in 1879; indeed, its construction was not completed without accidents, some of which fatal. Trains pass over the first portion of the bridge as if suspended in mid-air.
