Completed in 1834, the Allegheny Portage Railroad used a series of stepped inclines and steam locomotives to physically haul canal boats over the 2,400-foot Allegheny Mountain range. Today this historic site pays homage to that inventive railroad-canal system that survived for about 20 years before railroads replaced it.
