Established in 1997, this is the only unit of the National Park System preserving the virgin tall-grass ecosystem that once cloaked the Great Plains. The 10,894-acre national preserve has a hiking trail; in summer there's a 7mi interpretive bus tour and tours of a 19C limestone ranch home, a barn and a one-room schoolhouse.
