The Michelin Guide's review
The island of Awaji (Awaji-shima), linked to Honshu and Shikoku by two large suspended bridges, is the largest island of the Inland Sea. The birthplace of Ningyo Joruri, puppet theatre, it is also the main producer of Japanese incense and continues to supply 70% of the market. This sweet-smelling wood is said to have been discovered in the 6C by fishermen sifting through driftwood after a storm. The island is home to two major works by architect Ando Tadao: Awaji Yumebutai hotel and Honpuku-ji temple.
