The highway crosses Nisutlin Bay and hugs the shore of this long narrow lake for about 48km/30mi. Frequently the mountains and lake are dotted with clusters of the Yukon's adopted emblem, the pinkish purple flower called fireweed, common throughout the Yukon and British Columbia. The climate here is dry (less than 305mm/12in of rain per year) and warm in summer. At the head of the lake, the road crosses the Teslin River by a high bridge.
