Dominating railway land next to CN Tower-one of the few central locations big enough to hold it-this huge, domed sports/entertainment complex is home to American League Baseball's Toronto Blue Jays. The multipurpose stadium hosts rock concerts, conventions and trade shows as well as sports. Designed by architect Roderick Robbie and engineer Michael Allen, Rogers Centre was built (1989) by a private consortium in partnership with local and provincial governments for over $570 million. Not only a sports centre, its Renaissance Hotel offers convenient lodging for waterfront sightseeing. Projecting from the Front Street facade 5m/16ft above street level, Michael Snow's 14 painted-fibreglass sculptures (The Audience) tower over arriving visitors. Rogers Centre boasts a 3ha/8-acre retractable roof, a 348-room hotel overlooking the playing field, a 150-seat cinema, several restaurants and underground parking for 575 vehicles. In the open-air mode, the four roof panels are stacked over the north end of the field. In 20 minutes the panels can be closed by pushing a button to activate a computer-controlled operation. Tall enough to accommodate a 31-storey building, the roof is 205m/674ft at its widest and rises to a height of 91m/299ft at its centre. The arena's flexible field (basketball, football, tennis, track or baseball configurations) and seating can be arranged for a crowd of 53,000 or an audience of 10,000.
