These ruins are thought to mark the site of the Toltec capital of Tollan. The city inherited the culture of Teotihuacán and introduced a new power structure, whose iconography of warriors and sacrifices can be seen on the façades. A bas-relief on the Serpents Wall (Coatepantli) shows snakes eating skeletons. Tula's most striking building remains the Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli (Temple of the Morning Star), which bears an astonishing likeness to Chichén Itzá.
