Construction of Tumacácori's Franciscan mission, designed to replace a small 1757 Jesuit church, began in 1800; but the bell-tower dome was uncapped (it remains incomplete) when missions were secularized in 1828. Walking tours of the mission ruins begin at a visitor center and include the sanctuary, cemetery, granary, convent and fiesta grounds.
