Usa-jingu shrine

Useful information

Description

Dating from the 8C, this immense Shinto shrine was the first ever to be devoted to Hachiman, syncretic divinity of Emperor Ôjin (4C), protector of Japan. The huge wooded grounds are graced with several tori, small bridges and ponds, as well as the shrine itself. After a 1km/0.6mi-walk and a purification ritual, a path lined by lanterns leads to a bright-red main pavilion, split into two parallel edifices, Nai-in, place of rest, and Ge-in, daytime residence of the divinity.
