Deserted until recently, this peninsula is being nibbled away by tourist infrastructures. To the east of Varadero is the Mansión du Pont de Nemours, also known as Xanadú, built in 1930 for a French billionaire and now a luxury hotel where guests sip drinks looking out towards Florida. Beyond, visitors can enter the Cueva de Ambrosio and take in its pre-Columbian rock paintings. Some wild pockets remain, such as the Área Protegida Varahicacos, centred on a lagoon, still inhabited by the peninsula's original flora and fauna.
