Description

Built in 1170 for the Counts of Auvergne, this feudal castle was for centuries a royal possession (several French queens stayed here, including Jeanne, wife of John the Good, Catherine de Medici and Queen Margot). Inside, note the Romanesque round-mantel fireplace, the cupola-ceilinged bedroom and the fine old furniture. An unexpected hanging garden, called the Jardin des Croisades - Garden of the Crusades, adjoins the building. The rampart walk boasts a fine view over part of the Monts Dore, Monts Dôme and the Limagne plain.
