To protect themselves from non-stop American bombings, the inhabitants of Vinh Moc, a village situated just to the north of the 17th parallel and the demilitarised zone, dug out three tunnels where they could hide. At depths of around 12-23m underground, this 2km network of tunnels sheltered several hundred people from 1966-68. The tunnels are open to the public and there is also a small museum which provides information on life underground.
