Looked at from street level, one could easily question whether the imposing fortified building and sharp bastion are really a church. Indeed, despite its Renaissance origins (1575), St. Mary's church is more akin to a fortress than a palace. The reason for this peculiar architectural choice was the Turkish invasion of the island (1571).
