An important venue during the Boer-Zulu War, Mgungundlovu is the site of the massacre of Piet Retief and sixty of his companions, who came in peace to ask Dingaan for land where they could settle. The bloodthirsty Zulu king, a worthy successor to Shaka, had established his capital here. The museum and a recreation of part of the site recount its history.
