Useful information

Description

In 1607, this island on the James River became the site of the first permanent English-speaking colony on American soil. Most of the island has been returned to its natural state, but two 5km and 8km loop drives still weave across its bogs and woodlands. Behind Jamestown's visitor centre (film, exhibitions) you'll see excavated foundations of the former colonial capital, of which all that has survived is the brick campanile of a church dating from 1617.
