This museum dedicated to biology, geology, archaeology and astronomy also charts the history of York, from the Roman then Viking occupations up to the Middle Ages. The Middleham Jewel and Ring are its star exhibits. One section is devoted to St Mary's Abbey, a Benedictine property founded in 1088 by William II (Rufus the Red). In the garden, the observatory housing a telescope from 1850 and a clock that set the city's official time is also worth seeing.
