Along with Gradec, Kaptol is one of the two "eyries" upon which Zagreb emerged. Kaptol is also known as "the Chapter" - the name given to the vast square which stretches out in front of the cathedral of the Assumption, the street which heads north from there, and the entire district, which was once fortified. Its special atmosphere is due, perhaps, to the many religious communities still living here.
