The Howard family residence is as exceptional as the setting in which it stands. There is more than a passing resemblance to the Versailles Palace in this early-18C castle, considered as one of the finest buildings of the English Baroque. It claims all the more admiration in that it is the trial - and masterstroke - of the architect and playwright John Vanbrugh (1664-1726), whose first creation this is.
