Putuo Zongcheng is the largest of the temples in Chengde, and is a smaller yet spectacular reproduction of the Potala in Lhasa. It was built in 1771 to provide a worthy setting in which to receive Tibetan delegations during their visits to celebrate the 60th birthday of Emperor Qianlong. This imposing fortress-like building now hosts an exhibition of Tibetan-inspired Buddhist objets d'art.
