May 18 National Cemetery

Useful information

Description

The May 18th National Cemetery was built in 1997 to give a decent burial to those pro-democracy demonstrators gunned down during the military repression organised by General Chun Do-hwan on that fateful date in 1980. A 40m-high memorial tower, symbol of resurrection, dominates this moving and unmissable 14ha site. Among the various buildings, a museum (photos, films, multimedia) and a hall of remembrance consecrate the memory of the victims.
