Bearing the no 31 on the itinerary of 88 sacred temples, Chikurin-ji, "temple of the bamboo grove", was founded in 724 by Gyoki, a Buddhist monk. Its five-storey pagoda was reworked in 1970, but it has a lovely Zen garden, designed in the 14C by Soseki, and the Treasure House contains fine statues from the Heian and Kamakura eras (10C-13C).
