Myoshin-ji
The Green Guide

Useful information

Description

Myoshin-ji, which belongs to the Zen sect of Rinzai, is not easy to get to know. Only four (out of 46) shrines of the vast complex can be visited. The main temple houses the Yokushitsu, a wooden structure devoted to the monks' ablutions; in the hall of sermons, (hatto), admire the superb painted dragon on the ceiling. Of the three secondary temples, we recommend heading for Taizo-in temple, which contains a 15C masterpiece of black-ink pictorial art, the Hyonenzu. Stunning garden.
